History

The Aromantic Flag is a community-designed pride flag representing the aromantic identity—individuals who experience little to no romantic attraction. While the exact creator and date remain undocumented in mainstream sources, the flag emerged from online LGBTQ+ communities during the 2010s as discussion of romantic orientation became more prominent alongside sexual orientation. The five-stripe design uses green to represent the aromantic spectrum and community growth, white to symbolize the asexual-aromantic overlap and platonic love, gray to represent the demisexual/demiromantic spectrum, and black to represent asexuality. The flag gained visibility through Tumblr and other online forums where LGBTQ+ communities collaboratively develop and refine identity symbols. Like many modern pride flags, its specific color meanings and design choices reflect ongoing community dialogue about romantic identity and representation.
