History

The Leather Pride Flag was designed by Tony DeBlase and first displayed at the 1989 Mr. Leather Contest in Chicago. The flag was created to represent the leather, latex, and BDSM communities, symbolizing the freedom of sexual expression and consensual practices within these communities. According to Ms. National Leather Association International 1996 (Stacey), the red heart represents love, the white stripe symbolizes purity achieved through open, honest, and consensual expression, black represents leather, and blue represents denim—both materials commonly worn and eroticized within the community. DeBlase intentionally designed the flag to be open to personal interpretation by each person. This lighter variant was created to maintain visibility and clarity when displayed at smaller sizes, making it more practical for badges, pins, and digital use while preserving the original symbolism of the flag.
