History
The Progress Pride Flag (intersex & two-spirit version) is a community-created variation that combines elements of two important pride symbols. It builds upon Daniel Quasar's 2018 Progress Pride Flag design, which itself was an evolution of the original 1978 rainbow flag created by Gilbert Baker. This variant incorporates the intersex-inclusive chevron design from the intersex pride flag while adding the Two-Spirit emblem, representing Indigenous LGBTQ+ identities recognized across various North American First Nations and Indigenous cultures. Two-Spirit describes individuals who embody multiple gender roles and spiritual identities within their communities and carries significant historical and cultural meaning predating contemporary Western concepts of sexual orientation and gender identity. The design reflects the broader modern pride vexillology movement, where flags serve as tools for community recognition and solidarity. Like many community-authored flags, this version emerged through online forums and local pride communities rather than through a single official designer, demonstrating how pride flag design has become a participatory process that evolves with community input and feedback.
